Created in 2008 by the eclectic and prolific Belgian director and artist Jan Fabre and the Croatian dancer Ivana Jozic, Another Sleepy Dusty Delta Day recently began a new tour around Europe (Russia, France, Germany, Poland, Greece), with the new, talented actress Artemis Stavridi. The production is a choreography for a solo dancer and the title refers to Bobby Gentry’s legendary blues song of 1967, Ode to Billy Joe, a ballad with almost gothic tones that provides the soundtrack for the entire performance. A touching story of death and violence, love and life, abandon and solitude, framed in a stage set that is like an installation, with model trains on the floor and caged birds hanging from the ceiling, and the remains of a deep rift in the spirit of the girl, in love and abandoned.

text, stage design and direction by Jan Fabre

Ivo Van Hove, the director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam, is probably one of the most outstanding talents on the contemporary European scene. Van Hove is well known in the U.S., where he won an Obie Award for his off-Broadway productions, in Australia, Canada and Asia, and he is now working for the first time in Italy, with an exciting version of Jean Cocteau’s La Voix Humaine. This splendid monologue, possibly one of the most touching ever written for a female performer, conveys the torment of sentiment through a long telephone call. Words, which are the true protagonists of this play, are unfurled in truncated sentences and questioning silences, and succeed in conveying the voice at the other end of the line to the audience. Van Hove proposes a refined interpretation, that is perfectly balanced between morbid voyeurism and hesitant involvement, the perfect ploy for Halina Reijn, the well-known and talented Dutch actress, who is familiar to the audiences thanks to films like Black Book by Paul Verhoeven, Hotel Paraiso by Paula van der Oest and Valkyrie by Bryan Singer.

A Life in Three acts, which won the Fringe Prize at the Edinburgh Festival and the Herald Archangel Prize, is the story of Bette Bourne, a famous performer and key figure of the post-war gay liberation movement. This lively, exciting work is an adaptation of some private conversations between Bourne and playwright Mark Ravenhill. Bourne presents it as a monologue, and it follows her childhood in post-war Britain, her life in the “Drag commune” of Notting Hill in the Seventies, her seminal roles in the birth of the Gay Liberation Front in Great Britain, the BLOOLIPS gay theatre company that is famous the world over, and much more.

The first production by Rodrigo Garcìa for Prospettiva tackles the issues of the destruction and death of the Western world, stripping and demistifying them. With Muerte y reencarnación en un cow boy, we begin to enjoy the beginning of the end, we travel through the world of advertising, which has infiltrated every area of our existence, replacing politics and governments. We fall into the chasm of a crisis of values and conscience, cradled in the cotton wool of our consent, which is both tragic and grotesque. The main characters of the play are two solitary cowboys, who will be responsible for grasping many of the more significant aspects of our society: from comfort to existential boredom, false unhappy laughter and the bourgeois hypocrisy of our relationships.

Tony Clifton Circus presents “Hula Doll”, a performance of extreme comedy or rather of comic extremism, halfway between nonsense and provocation. On stage, two sour clowns, a musician, a translator and a pile of objects give way to their playful fantasy as well as their black instincts. The result is a disorderly mosaic of freedom and frustration, deep laughter and blows to the stomach, poetry turned into blood and stupidity so extreme it becomes thought. The performance unravels through verbal provocation and apparently absurd actions, with the purpose of creating an increasingly disarming and hyper-real situation, in order to induce such a state of involvement in the public that they are ready to believe that everything is possible, in theatre and in real life. Hula Doll is difficult to classify, its comedy wants to be junk, and its drama touches on intellectual pornography.
