Alain Platel and les ballets C de la B also present Platel’s new work Gardenia at the Torinodanza Festival and Prospettiva. “There is an actress called Vanessa Van Durme,” said Platel, “whom I knew as a cabaret artiste in Ghent. She acted in popular theatre. She is a transsexual, one of the first in Ghent. She is sixty now. One day she came to ask me whether I could work with her and her friend, all aged 60-70, transsexuals or transvestites who worked in cabaret in the 1970s.” This was the starting point of Platel’s new project, which combines laughter, and tears, pain and entertainment more than ever before.
