The career of the Flemish company tg STAN (Jolente De Keersmaeker, Sara De Roo, Damiaan De Schrijver and Frank Vercruyssen) is long and successful. The 2009 Festival d’Automne of Paris dedicated a great tribute to the ensemble, performing all the company’s major productions in the city’s theatres in a single month. «“Sauve qui peut”, pas mal comme titre» is one of them, perhaps the most fascinating chapter of the trilogy that tg STAN have dedicated to the Austrian writer and playwright Thomas Bernhard. In his “dramoletti”, one-act plays, short farces, small sketches, miniature dramas on the obtuseness of the Germans, Bernhard dissects the Germans’ difficult Nazi past, like the latent Fascism of contemporary society. Costume changes at the speed of Radetzky’s March, juggling with the accessories and props are only some of the ingredients with which tg STAN manage to bring out both the sense of the grotesque and that of the poetical in a work that is dominated by an angry, brilliant and enchanting linguistic verve.
